Weekend #4

Well, we've been working on the house for a whole month now! I can barely believe it!!  We've made some great progress so far!
There are four closets in the three bedrooms (two of them are in the master bedroom) and they are DONE.  Primed and painted!!!
Both of my parents did a lot of work on the closets with me!

In more exciting news, the master bedroom is DONE! Primed and painted!

Charlie even installed a new light fixture and wall sockets!

The opposite corner of the master with the new light!
Last but not least, I had to include some gratuitous puppy pictures!
Gus got tired from all the work!
Next weeekend is Easter and I get Friday off, so I'm hoping I can get one more bedroom and the hallway finished!  I feel like we're chipping away at a boulder so its nice to see progress and feel some sense of accomplishment!

Weekend #3

Well, I think the novelty is starting to wear off . . . I didn't get motivated to get to work until Saturday afternoon.  In my defense, Charlie had been on a business trip to Texas for the past week so I wanted to spend time with him on Friday night.  Both my mom and my dad came on Saturday and Sunday to help with painting.  My dad is actually the fastest painter we've seen! With his help we finished 3 of the four closets and we got two of the three bedrooms painted.  Small victories!!!

The biggest news of the whole weekend (at least in our house) is our new addition: Gus!  Gus is 8 weeks old and is half cocker spaniel half lab.  Charlie and I have been arguing about what kind of dog we wanted and somehow a split down the middle came our way this weekend!! We are so excited about him - and yes I'm writing this after night number one, which featured waking up to go outside and a 5:45 am wake-up for good time! :-)

Gus Gus!!

He doesn't really have white spots . . . he got in some of the paint.

Weekend #2

This weekend the pink bathroom came out and we continued priming and even got some of the ceilings painted!  We didn't get any work in on Friday beause our new neighbors invited us over for a "Welcome to Mayville" party - we think this a good sign!  Charlie's parents and his sister Dani came down on Saturday and my mom came on Sunday.  Everyone was a huge help!
First things first, the pink bathroom . . .
Dani and Charlie's Dad took down the pink tile, one by one.

Charlie started taking out the wall.  At this point, we have no plumbing and not one fully enclosed bathroom.  :-)

Holly and I finished the priming in the bedrooms and the hallway  - including the ceilings.
My mom and I painted the ceilings on Sunday - we had the dogs to keep us company.  :-)

Weekend #1

This was the first weekend Charlie and I actually got some real work done on the house.  Charlie spent the weekend demolishing the yellow bathroom (let me know if you know of anyone looking for a cast iron yellow tub, toilet, or sink!) and all the plumbing in the house.  I got to work priming the walls in the bedrooms.  The bedrooms are actually in good shape minus the gross walls.  We don't think they've been touched since the house was built in 1956.  My parents and my brother Kyle came down and helped us out a lot! I think they are going to get sick of this house before we do!

Just the beginning . . .
Walls, vents, and whatnot . . . it all has to go!

No more yellow bathroom!! Yay!

Apparently, no more walls either.  That opening used to be the built-in in the bedroom below

I think my mother had to stifle some sobs when that was torn out.
I couldn't get a rag over the plaster to wash the walls so I vacuumed them.  I remember being irritated a few years ago when Charlie bought that giant shop-vac . . . now I see the wisdom of his ways.  :-)
Non-stop priming! My mom was a huge help!!
And we can't not thank the BEST ceiling painter in the whole world, Kyle!
We don't have pictures of my dad, but he did a lot of work with Charlie!
Thanks so much for the help!!

Our New Place

Charlie and I decided that we needed a new daunting challenge in our lives since law school, the bar exam, and job hunting is over!  The next obvious step was buying a house.  We couldn't settle for just any house, we wanted the perfect one.  One without a kitchen or even working plumbing, but with lots of potential!! Some days I wonder what I've gotten myself into, but then I just think about all the things we want to do and what this place could look like!  The house is in a nice neighborhood and near a beautiful river area.  The old saying goes, you should buy the worst house on the block, not the best.  We definitely did that.  :-)
I'm blogging our progress so we can share with our family and friends and so Charlie and I can kind of chronicle our work.  Please feel free to ask questions or leave comments! We'd love to hear!
